Cute and cozy? Yes, please.
Let me paint you a picture: It's October. You're hanging out with your friends, your favourite hot drink in hand, and you're about to snap a cute photo for Instagram. You fix your hair, straighten your posture, and smile for the camera.
What do you see yourself wearing? With this guide to all things Fall fashion, you'll have a cute outfit (that still feels like your style) for any and every Fall photo op. Here's what to have in your closet this Fall:
T Shirts: Every good wardrobe features some timeless basics. That means plain white (and black) t shirts, which go with just about everything. Fall is full of warm, bright colours like red and yellow, so it's worth having a few t shirts in those colours as well.
You'll probably also want some t shirts that aren't just solid colours, but what exactly that looks like is up to you. The most important thing about t shirts is that they're comfortable, and they have the fit you're looking for. You might want graphic tees, cropped t shirts, oversized shirts, or a variety of styles. To help you determine what type of t shirt works best for you, here's a short quiz.
Button Downs: Just like with t shirts, a few solid coloured button downs in black, white, and some Fall colours are a great addition to your wardrobe that will go with almost any outfit. You can wear a button down a variety of ways: open over a t shirt or tank, tucked in under a sweater, or buttoned up on its own for a timeless, professional look.
Aside from your go to solid colours, patterned button downs can make great statement pieces. Patterns can range from subtle to loud, and adding a patterned button down can be a good way to have fun with an outfit while still being work appropriate. Exactly what pattern you choose and how you style your button down is up to you!
Flannels: I know that flannels are technically a type of button down, but I feel they deserve their own section. It might just be my Canadianism showing, but I think flannels are the peak of cozy fall shirts. I'm a big fan of an oversized flannel myself (especially in a Fall colour like red), but you can style a flannel any way you like to style a regular button down. While flannels can sometimes be a little expensive, they're often available for cheaper at thrift stores – I got my favourite flannel shirt for five dollars.
Sweaters: Fall is the perfect season for cozy sweaters. Oversized knit sweaters in jewel tones, thin fitted sweaters in black or grey, graphic sweatshirts advertising your favourite tv show or local business. Personally, I'm a big fan of solid colours or stripes for knit sweaters (especially looser knits), and patterns or logos on sweatshirts. What kind of sweater you wear on a given day is all about what you're wearing it with. Thinner, more fitted sweaters make it easier to layer up (and they look great over button downs), but if you don't need a jacket, oversized sweaters have that maximum coziness factor.
Jackets: I love jackets. Fall is a good time for denim jackets in blue or black, corduroy jackets in red or yellow, black pleather jackets, blazers and bomber jackets in basically any colour... If it's really cold, maybe even a wool coat in grey or black. If you're an artistic person (or even if you're not) you might even want to customize your jacket with paint or patches.
A jacket can totally change a look – it can dress up a casual outfit, or put a unique spin on a basic look. Jackets make good statement pieces, since they're one of the first things that people see about you, but they also need to be somewhat versatile, since you're likely to wear a given jacket more often than a given shirt or pair of pants. My main piece of advice about jackets is to find one that you would be happy to wear everyday. For me, it's a black pleather jacket, but for you, it could be anything – whatever feels like you.
Jeans: I mostly just stick to high waisted black skinny jeans, which go with basically any outfit. You, however, may be slightly more adventurous than that, and want to wear another style, like mom jeans, straight leg jeans, or low rise jeans, in another colour, like blue, grey, or a pattern. Like jackets, jeans can be customized with paint or patches, or you can make your own ripped jeans, or acid wash them with bleach.
Other Pants: Again, I mostly stick to skinny jeans, but there are a lot of other options out there. Grey, black, or plaid cigarette pants. Paper bag trousers in fun colours and patterns. Comfy leggings and joggers in any colour.
Skirts: If you're a skirt wearer, they're the perfect item for early fall, when it's not quite hot enough for shorts, but not quite cold enough for pants. Fall is a great time for pencil, flared, or a line skirts in black, grey, red, purple, plaid, or other patterns.High waisted skirts look great with crop tops or tucked in shirts.
Dresses & Rompers: Much like skirts, dresses and rompers can be good items for middling temperatures. Fall is a great time to wear a witch-esque little black dress or a floral sundress or romper. Dresses and rompers are almost outfits unto themselves, but they can be dressed up or down with jackets, shoes, and jewelry – I'm a big proponent of wearing pretty sundresses with sneakers for a more casual look.
Accessories: Fall is when the weather starts to get cold, so it's a good time to break out the scarves, gloves, and hats. I love blanket scarves (mostly because they're essentially just blankets that you can wear) in black or plaid, or cotton scarves in patterns, but you might also want chunkier knit scarves, or brighter colours. Black boots and cozy socks are an asset to any Fall wardrobe. You might want to add fun pins to your outfit, especially Fall and Halloween themed ones.
So, with those items, you're ready to make an outfit. The easiest way to do this is to choose one statement piece that's notable in colour or texture or or size, and then use more basic, subdued items for the rest of the outfit. For instance, you might want to wear a patterned button down over a plain black tank top and jeans. You also might want to choose a colour scheme to use throughout your outfit, like wearing black boots, a red skirt, a black shirt with a red pattern, red earrings, and a red cardigan. It's also good to have balance in your outfit – say, to have an oversized, chunky sweater with plain black fitted leggings, so there's a balance in colour, texture, and size.
Of course, all of this is just suggestions. If you want to wear four different neon colours, or all loose clothing, or three different patterns, go for it – and be sure to leave a description of your favourite Fall outfit in the comments.
