30 Foods To Make This September

Not even one of these is pumpkin flavoured.

Today is September 1st, which means that it's unofficially Fall – and officially time to start eating some Fall foods. If you're looking for some new dishes to try this month, here is one recipe to try for every day of September.

1. Blackberry cheesecake

August is blackberry season, which means that the first day of September is the perfect time to take those blackberries and bake them into a cake. You can mix the blackberries into your cheesecake directly, or just eat them on the side or on top if you prefer.

2. Homemade granola

Things tend to get a little busier in September, and it can be harder to find time every day to make a proper breakfast. You can make this easy homemade granola – or your own variation of it – on an evening or weekend and have breakfast for the next several days. Just add yogurt and fruit!

3. Roasted cauliflower with turmeric

There are a lot of ways to eat cauliflower, but my favourite way is roasted with a little oil and a lot of turmeric. This is a great early September dish because it's good in warm or cold weather; the lemon and turmeric feel Summery, especially with their bright yellow colour, but the warmth and flavour are the perfect way to warm up on a cold day.

4. Stuffed acorn squash

You can stuff acorn squash with meat, rice, vegetables, even fruit – basically anything you like. However, I would recommend this recipe for acorn squash stuffed with quinoa salad.

5. Peanut butter cookies

September means colder weather, or as I like to think of it, good baking weather. What better way to enjoy the first rainy day of the month than to put on some nice music, light a cozy candle and make some peanut butter cookies? You might also enjoy this super simple flourless variety.

6. Mango chutney (or your favourite type)

Summer is winding down, which means that soon Summer fruits will be out of season. Before it ends, you can preserve one of those fruits in the form of a mango chutney – or whatever type of chutney you prefer.

7. Thai red curry

This dish is one of my favourite foods. You can switch up the meat, vegetables, and spice level to those of your liking – just don't forget to add the fish sauce.

8. Apple cider ice cream

Sometimes, September is just as warm and sunny as August. If that's the case but you still want to get a taste of Fall, you could try making this apple cider ice cream to help you cool off.

9. Tortilla soup

This tortilla soup can be as mild or as spicy as you like, and it works with a wide variety of ingredients. You can top it with store-bought corn chips, but if you have the extra time, I would recommend hand making the tortilla chips as well.

10. Bread

This bread takes only a few ingredients, and while it needs several hours of rising and resting, there's not a lot of active work involved. It's essentially an easy way to get fresh, delicious artisan bread.

11. Gnocchi with vegetables

My sister introduced me to this dish a while ago and I haven't been able to stop eating it since. You could try it with any number of different vegetables – I'm a big fan of adding some asparagus. However you want to customize this dish, it's quick, healthy, and delicious.

12. Chili con carne

Chili is one of those dishes that seems to get better overnight, which means that it makes great leftovers. This chili is the perfect way to warm up on a chilly day – a joke which I'm sure nobody has ever made before.

13. Yam fries

I love fries. I love restaurant fries, I love homemade oven fries, and I love these yam (or sweet potato) fries. They make a great side dish, but you may be tempted to eat so many of them you don't have room for anything else.

14. Coffee cookies.

I'm a big coffee drinker, which you might have gathered if you've read any of my other posts about food. These coffee cookies combine my favourite drink with one of my favourite desserts.

15. Basil pesto

Fresh basil improves just about anything. In fact, I like to keep a basil plant around so I have an endless supply of basil leaves. This pesto sauce is best made with elephant basil, but you can make it with whatever you have on hand. I find it always makes less pesto than I expect, so you'll want to err on the side of adding too much.

16. Applesauce

Applesauce is a classic Fall food. You can buy it from the store, but it'll never be as good as this homemade version. You'll want to use a good baking apple like a MacIntosh to ensure that you get that perfect applesauce texture.

17. Oatmeal muffins

Growing up, we had a lot of apple oatmeal muffins. Those are good, but if I'm making oatmeal muffins for myself I prefer to add blackberries or raspberries instead. The key ingredient, however, is a little bit of cinnamon – or maybe even a lot of cinnamon.

18. Cinnamon rolls

On the topic of a lot of cinnamon, fresh cinnamon rolls are the breakfast you need this September. If you want a quicker version, you can make these ones, which have no yeast.

19. Potato skins

I've always called these "potato boats", but apparently most people call them potato skins. If you've ever heard the term potato boats, please let me know in the comments.

20. Maple cookies

Fellow Canadians will probably be familiar with those maple-leaf-shaped maple flavoured cookies. This recipe will let you make your own version at home.

21. Beef Bourguignon

There's nothing cozier than the smell of beef stew on a cold day. As the temperature starts dropping in late September, this beef Bourguignon will keep you warm and happy.

22. Mexican street corn

September is the tail end of corn season, and there's no better way to go out on a high note than by making this Mexican street corn. Make sure you have corn holders – it can get messy otherwise.

23. Grilled asparagus

Asparagus is one of my favourite vegetables, and it pairs nicely with some of the dishes I've already listed, like potato skins/boats. You can cook asparagus a multitude of ways, but my favourite is just grilled with some salt.

24. Chocolate bark

This is an easy treat to make, and you can add whatever you want – as a kid, I would smash up candy canes and make chocolate peppermint bark, but if you're making this in the Fall you might prefer to add walnuts, almonds, or cranberries.

25. Maple fudge

If attempting to cut out your own maple leaf cookies wasn't working for you, here's another way to get some maple into your diet: maple fudge. It's pretty rich, but it's tasty, and it's perfect for Fall.

26. Moroccan chicken with olives

I love olives. I like to make this dish with stuffed olives, but it's good no matter what. If you enjoy this dish, you might want to make your own ras el hanout for future use.

27. Tornado Potatoes

Aside from having a fun name, these potatoes look cool and taste great. You can try a variety of toppings: parmesan, lemon, chili, bacon bits and sour cream, melted cheese... however you prefer to spruce your spuds.

28. Hoot owl cookies

These cookies are a cute – and tasty – way to welcome Fall. You can use a variety of things for the beak and eyes – I usually do M&Ms for the eyes, and a chocolate chip to make a hooked beak.

29. Chorizo sauce

I eat a lot of pasta on days where I need a quick and filling meal. After a while, I stop feeling excited about eating more pasta – but I do feel excited about making spicy chorizo sauce, and so will you.

30. Cinnamon challah bread

I could eat challah bread for days – in particular, this cinnamon challah bread. I always find that the filling leaks out and burns, so you may want to make less filling than the recipe actually calls for.

What foods are you planning to make this September? Let me know in the comments – and be sure to provide a link to the recipe!
