I recently wrote a post about different spooky episodes from some of my favourite podcasts. Today, I want to focus on a podcast that is spooky in every episode: The Ghoul Mates. The podcast, hosted by husband-and-wife duo Mandy and Rudy (pictured above), focuses on Halloween-themed pop culture, as well as the ways the couple incorporates Halloween into their own life – even their wedding.
I had the chance to ask the hosts of The Ghoul Mates some questions about their podcast and their opinions on various spooky things, and I'll be sharing their answers throughout this post. To start, I asked if they could describe their podcast for those of you who are unfamiliar with it.
For those who don’t know who you are, can you summarize what your podcast is about and how it came to be?
Our podcast keeps the spirit of Halloween alive, all year, through pop culture and nostalgia. Our name is The Ghoul Mates because we fell in love at first fright while strolling the aisles of Spirit Halloween. We both really needed a creative outlet and we wanted to create a community for people who love all the spooky, and sometimes nerdy, things that we do, too! There are a lot of great, niche podcasts that just talk about horror movies, ghost stories, or true crime but we wanted to have a space to celebrate all aspects of Halloween. You never know what might spook The Ghoul Mates in the next episode!
What’s your favourite thing about running a podcast?
We love curating everything we produce to be a cohesive, spooky experience. We plan content on Instagram to supplement the things discussed in the podcast…to bring it to life in a way. It works both ways. Instagram followers could tune in to the podcast to hear the stories behind many of the photos. The Ghoul Mates isn’t just a podcast; it’s an experience. We want our Ghoulster community to feel like they are part of our spooky world.
In addition to their podcast, The Ghoul Mates have an Instagram page where they post clips from their podcast, photos from various Halloween activities, and perhaps most importantly, pictures of their dogs (or their "little monsters", as they like to say) in Halloween costumes.
The Ghoul Mates is the perfect podcast for all Halloween lovers. It covers everything from horror movies to Halloween honeymoons to discussions about ghosts. Whatever you love about Halloween, this podcast has an episode about it – and you're sure to find kindred spirits in the hosts, who are endlessly passionate about the spooky season.
If you could play any horror movie character, who would you choose and why?
Master of Scaremonies Rudy would be Jason Voorhees because he’s like Godzilla. He’s a misunderstood, unstoppable force, that goes through life destroying everything. It’s a cautionary tale to be kind to people.
Ghost Hostess Mandy would be Laurie Strode. She’s a logical realist who always outwits Michael Myers (as much as Mandy loves him). And she’s very innovative and uses her surroundings in sticky situations.
What are your favourite podcasts to listen to?
It depends on the mood but a few of our favorites are Let’s Get Spooky, Scary(ish) Podcast, Two Girls One Ghost, and My Favorite Murder.
The Ghoul Mates are based out of Arizona, so Fall looks a little different for them than it does for myself in Canada, or for many of you living in colder climates. On the podcast, they discuss the things that make it feel like Fall for them, even when the weather is still warm and sunny. However, I was curious to know if they had ever experienced Halloween somewhere a little more atmospheric.
You guys live in Arizona, so you don’t get that typical dark and stormy Halloween weather. Have you ever spent Halloween somewhere outside of Arizona?
We are so sad to say we have never spent Halloween where there is spooky weather. However, we are extremely thankful to Schnepf Farms, who throw a Pumpkin & Chili Party every year. It’s a huge fall festival with a corn maze, pumpkin patch, haunted hay ride, food, and so much more. It truly makes us feel like we are in Halloweentown…except it’s 110 degrees!
What’s your favourite thing about Halloween?
Our favorite thing about Halloween is that it is the one day of the year that you can be a total kid at heart! At The Ghoul Mates, we believe in staying kids at heart and believing in the magic of your imagination. But Halloween is the one day of the year that us spooky people can truly be ourselves.
