Have you ever seen those goth terrariums?
They're often on Instagram with captions like "cemeterrariums", and they're essentially regular terrariums but made to look like graveyards, often with the addition of skulls, pumpkins, or zombie hands.
Black Kat Kreations' Raven-inspired candles are sort of like the candle version of those terrariums; similarly aesthetic, similarly graveyard-esque, except that they also smell good.
I recently had the chance to interview Stefanie, the creator of Black Kat Kreations, about her work, which is inspired by everything from Nosferatu to Sailor Moon. Stefanie doesn't just make candles – her work also includes beauty products, decor, accessories, and jewelry.
That being said, Stefanie's candles, which she started making about two years ago, have now become a focal point of her business. Stefanie finds herself struck by "sudden inspiration" for candle ideas. "Sometimes the look first, sometimes the purpose first, or sometimes the scent," she explained. "Then I build and create the rest around that. Once I have all my supplies I cleanse them and infuse the wax with certain intentions. Once the candles are complete I also give them a quick spritz of a positive-energy spray."
She's created some pretty iconic candles for Black Kat Kreations. Among those are the Sailor Moon candles, the Pisces Dream candle, and the Day of the Dead candles, which she named as her personal favourites.
Stefanie also has a range of Halloween-inspired candles. "The first spooky ones I made were inspired by Poe’s The Raven and by Nosferatu," she told me. "I love gothic style horror and literature."
Her favourite gothic literature includes the works of Edgar Allen Poe and The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow – which she has a bit of a personal connection to, since the real town of Sleepy Hollow is close enough to her hometown for her to visit at least once every couple years.
Stefanie has done some pretty cool things while running Black Kat Kreations, but her favourite accomplishment is getting positive feedback and seeing that her products have made people happy. "It’s such a great feeling to have your work appreciated," she said. "My customers are the best, some have become friends. It’s really just an awesome feeling to be able to put love into your work, send it out into the world, and get love back! "
Stefanie also has an appreciation for other spooky businesses. "Terri Foss is one of my longtime favourites," she told me. "I have a few of her art pieces. So beautiful."
Currently, Black Kat Kreations is putting out their Christmas collection – but that doesn't mean nothing spooky! In addition to more traditional Christmas candles, they do a limited run of Krampus inspired candles for Krampusnacht each year.
