Yes, you can wear that two years in a row.
You've probably got a few old "classic" Halloween costumes in your closet. Maybe a witch hat, a vampire cape, or a set of cat ears. You might not want to wear the same costume two years in a row, but you also don't want to throw out costume stuff that you spent good money on after just one use. So what's the answer?
Puns. You can repurpose your old costumes, with a small twist, into totally different, more creative costumes with just a little time and a little dad humour. Here are seven suggestions for twists on classic Halloween costumes.
1. Sand Witch
Got an old witch costume? Got some beach supplies like sunglasses, a bathing suit, a beach towel, a pail and shovel, or a pair of sandals? Well, just sandwich those things together, and you have your new costume. For kids, carrying a beach pail can be a great way to hold candy while trick or treating. If you want to get really punny, you could combine this one with a cape and be a Hero Sand Witch.
2. Holy Roman Vampire
Got a vampire cape or fangs? Got a sheet and a cross necklace or old angel halo? Make your best toga, splatter it with washable fake blood, and transform into the Holy Roman Vampire. This one might take some explaining, but it's pretty easy to pull together, and if your cape and fangs get annoying, a toga still looks like a costume on its own.
3. Skeleton Crew
This can be used to repurpose one of two old costumes: Either take a skeleton costume and add a pirate hat, boots, and a long coat, or take an existing pirate costume and add skull face paint. This one probably works better as a group costume, since you're supposed to be a crew.
4. Cat's Pyjamas
Got a cat costume? Got a pair of pyjama pants or a dressing gown? This costume is fairly easy to understand, super comfortable, and nobody will judge you if you need to yawn or lie down – it's just part of your costume!
5. Ghost Writer
Got a ghost costume (or a sheet)? Got a notebook and pen? Welcome to your new life – or afterlife – as a ghost writer. Be sure to mention that you only write ghost stories.
6. Clown Prince
This one, like the skeleton crew one, combines two classic costumes. You can either take a clown costume and add a crown, or take a prince costume and add clown makeup and a nose.
7. Spaghetti Western
This one might take a little more effort, but a spaghetti costume is totally doable – just get some string and some fake meatballs. The crux of this costume, however, is combining your spaghetti with a classic cowboy costume, so you look like a character from a spaghetti western.
